The Lesser of Two Evils

“The lesser of two evils.” That’s what a friend told me when asked about John McCain. What is it about McCain that conservatives abhor? The response was quick. “He hates my industry, the pharmaceutical industry, he’s not business minded, and I don’t like his view on illegal immigration” When asked how he would vote. “McCain.” I don’t disagree with his assessment. There are many who feel the same. Yet I believe this dissatisfaction has grown to contempt. Many show contempt for this man regardless of his more conservative views. While he doesn’t reflect what conservatives wish he does represent sacrifice and service. Some would question his motives but it’s truly hard to see into a man’s heart. So we must take him at his word. As conservatives we need to stay true to fair-minded debates. Focus on issues instead of personal attacks.
Why? The Clinton’s are gone. It seems the tide has changed and the liberal left will anoint a new leader. A leader that many find inspirational, he seems to bring hope where none exists. Some pundits on the Right have started to analyze Senator Obama. The majority of this analysis has been substantive. Asking what does he mean by change. Many point out his socialistic style agenda of wealth redistribution. It has also turned personal and divisive. Talk show hosts like Michael Galleagar repeatedly insist on calling Senator Obama by his full name with emphasis on his middle name “Hussane”. He intimates concern for a Muslim being a president. This is dishonest. Senator Obama is not a Moslem. He has never been a Moslem. Rather he has been a devoted member of his own Christian domination for many years. I must point out that his minister has very strong views that concern me. But his middle name does not. This is a deceptive lie that we don’t need. We can win on facts. We can win on substance.

We need to disagree with McCain on his failure to enforce the border not in our perception that he detests conservatives. We need to disagree with Obama that healthcare for every man, women, and child, including all immigrates who can make it to the states is careless not that he has some desire to turn us over to communism. We can win this point for point. Conservative values win. Ideas can be wrong. I believe we are fortunate to have two men running for the oval office of character. It is time to look at the issue my fellow conservatives. Let’s keep McCain to the Right and keep Obama as Senator of Illinois. Let’s do it with the respect and dignity they deserve.
